A long time ago, during the dark ages, all people thought that in order to give their home a fresh scent, they had to use harsh, perfumey chemicals.
Ok, maybe not exactly, but I sure did.
In our old house, our basement was a little mildewy smelling so I would buy these powders to sprinkle into the carpets before vacuuming. I never actually stopped to think that my babies were crawling around on that very carpet and then putting their hands in their months only to slowly poison their little bodies and compromise their immune systems. And I didn't know that simply being around those synthetic scents is bad for your health. No wonder they were so boogery all the time!
But can you really have clean and fresh smelling carpets without the chemicals? What if you have pets? Yes, the answer is yes.
Here are two techniques I use that get bad odors out:
The Cotton Ball Way
Simply add one or two drops of essential oil onto a cotton ball and vacuum it up. As you continue to vacuum the scent of the oil will emit into the air.
Oils such as Purification, Citrus Fresh, Lemon, or any other citrus oil works great for this. Actually any oil works perfectly just as long as you like it's scent. The Premium Starter Kit from Young Living gives you a variety of 11 oils to experiment with.
DIY Freshening Powder
What you'll need
A Container: repurpose a larger Parmesan cheese or spice container
Baking Soda (I get mine here)
Your Favorite Essential Oil (I get mine here)
Fill your container about 3/4 full with the baking soda. Add about 6-8 drops of your essential oil (could be a little more or less depending on the size of your container). Close the lid and shake, shake, shake away.
I like to use Purification or Citrus Fresh but there are other blends I like to use as well, such as these combos I've made air fresheners with. Feel free to experiment and make your own scents.
Now you are ready to sprinkle your powder liberally onto your carpet about 10 -15 minutes before vacuuming.
This technique gets even the most serious odors out of carpets and couches. If you've got a basement with an extra harsh smell, try using a couple of drops of purification in a diffuser (you'll get one with the Premium Starter kit) and keep that running everyday for about a week or so. It works perfectly to eliminate those mildewy odors for good.
